Common Water Problems

Odor

While odor in water can be caused by a variety of factors, one of the most common sources of smelly water is sulfur or hydrogen sulfide gas. Sulfur in water is characterized by its “rotten egg” smell, and while there are no known health effects to having sulfur in water, in high enough concentrations, it can leave odors on clothing and hair, as well as cause corrosion in metal appliance parts.

Hard Water

Hard water is usually characterized by having higher levels of magnesium and calcium. Most homes have hard water either supplied by their municipal water supply or a private well. Hard water can cause bathtub rings, dry skin and hair, shortened life span of water-using appliances, and dinginess in clothes.

Poor Tasting Water

It is common for well water to develop a musty, earthy taste. This is caused by bacteria and algae present in your water as well as the soil it filters through to get to your well. These are not toxic, but it can be unpleasant to drink. A water filtration system often addresses this issue.

Bacteria

Bacteria is everywhere in our environment and many are beneficial to our health and well-being. Certain types of bacteria, including coliform bacteria (specifically E. Coli) in your drinking water supply can cause a range of problems, including diarrhea, vomiting, cramps, nausea, headaches, fever, fatigue, and in some cases, death.

Iron

If your water has a metallic taste, it is an indication that metals are present in your water supply. Iron and manganese are often naturally occurring and are found predominantly in groundwater. A low level of iron cannot harm your health, but a high iron in your drinking water can cause clogging over time, and stains on your fixtures and appliances that use water.

Lead

Over time, plumbing materials containing lead will begin to corrode, which exposes your water supply to lead. Corrosion is the wearing away or dissolving of metal from fixtures and pipes. Water that has a low mineral count or high acidity will result in more severe corrosion.

Signs of lead in your water supply include: discoloration, foul smells, and off-tasting water.

Copper

Copper is used to make many products including plumbing system components. The most common way copper can get into your water supply through the corrosion of copper plumbing components and brass fittings. Drinking too much copper may cause adverse health effects.
